How to use this image compressor

  1. Add your images. Drag one or more images onto the box above, or click it to pick files from your device. They appear in a list first — nothing is processed yet — and you can remove any item or keep adding more.
  2. Choose a quality level. The default of 80% shrinks files dramatically with no visible difference for most photos. Lower values make smaller files; higher values keep more detail. For PNG output, this setting controls the color palette size.
  3. Optionally resize or convert. Enter a maximum width/height in pixels to scale large images down (for example 1920 for web use), and pick an output format — or keep each image's original format.
  4. Click Compress images. A progress line tracks each file as it's processed — everything happens locally, on your device.
  5. Download. Save images one by one, or use Download all to grab the whole batch.

Why compress images?

Photos straight from a phone or camera are usually 3–10 MB each. That is far more data than most situations need, and oversized images cause real problems: they blow past upload limits, slow down websites, fill up storage and get rejected by forms. Compressing an image removes the data you don't need while keeping the image looking the same to the human eye.

A well-compressed image is typically 70–90% smaller than the original with no obvious quality loss. That difference adds up fast: a page with ten photos can go from 40 MB to under 4 MB, and a batch of product photos can be emailed instead of sent via a file-transfer service.

How it works — and why it's private

This tool uses your browser's built-in image engine (the same technology browsers use to display photos) to decode each image, optionally resize it, and re-encode it at your chosen quality. All of this happens in your device's memory. Nothing is sent over the network — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool will keep working. When you close the tab, everything is gone.

A quick note on formats: JPEG and WebP are lossy re-encodes, and the quality slider controls how much data is discarded. PNG files get smart palette quantization — the slider sets the palette size (up to 256 colors) and the tool applies dithering so gradients stay smooth. Photo PNGs typically shrink 60–85% this way while remaining proper PNGs with transparency intact. And no matter the format: if the tool can't beat your original file, it gives the original back.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The compressor runs entirely in your web browser. Your images are read, compressed and saved on your own device — they are never uploaded, transmitted or stored anywhere else.

Is there a limit on file size or number of images?

There is no hard limit and no daily quota. The practical limit is your device's memory, but a modern phone or computer can comfortably process dozens of photos in one batch.

Which image formats are supported?

You can drop in JPEG, PNG, WebP and most other formats your browser can open, including GIF and BMP. Output can be JPEG, PNG or WebP. Note that animated GIFs are converted to a single still frame.

Will compressing reduce the quality of my images?

JPEG and WebP use lossy compression, so some data is discarded — but at the default 80% quality the difference is usually invisible while the file is much smaller. PNG photos are smart-compressed with palette quantization and dithering: colors are reduced to a palette of up to 256 entries, the same technique professional PNG optimizers use, while the file stays a proper PNG with transparency support.

Why do some images barely shrink or stay the same size?

Sometimes an image is already optimally compressed — for example a JPEG saved at low quality by another app. The tool automatically steps quality down to find savings, tries multiple PNG strategies (palette quantization and lossless optimization) and picks the best result. If nothing can beat your original file, it returns the original untouched — you never end up with a bigger file.

Why is my converted JPEG larger than the original WebP?

WebP is a more efficient format than JPEG — the same image typically needs 25–35% fewer bytes. When you explicitly convert to JPEG, the tool honors your choice and delivers a JPEG at your chosen quality, even if it ends up larger. If your goal is the smallest possible file, use WebP as the output format.

Does it work on my phone?
